Contractors and construction crews are busy this summer carrying out the 2017 bond issue orders of Rockwood School District voters.
Rockwood Facilities Director Chris Freund said major progress is being made on the addition to Geggie Elementary.
"With enrollment in the Eureka area increasing, we knew we needed to make some changes at Geggie Elementary. That includes an eight-classroom addition. It's about 7,500 square feet of classrooms. We're re-doing the media center/library as well – that's about a 3,500 square-foot renovation. We tore down the old library and are constructing a new media center. The library was small for their enrollment, so we took the opportunity to widen that footprint and increase square footage."
Freund said construction has gone well since the February ground-breaking on the new addition.
"Our goal is to have the Geggie media center available in August, preferably before school starts," said Freund. "We knew that was an ambitious schedule, but if weather continues to cooperate we'll be in good shape."
Freund said crews hope to have the classroom addition complete in December, so students and staff would transition into the new space over winter break. There are also some small interior renovations to existing classroom space.
"Part of that is an Innovation Room," said Freund. We're converting the old music room into Geggie's Innovation Room. All that interior work in the existing building will be done by the time school starts."
Principal Dr. Mary Kleekamp said, "It is such an exciting time for Geggie as we enjoy the progress made on our construction. The added wing and conversion of space will provide much needed relief and add quality space for student learning!"
Superintendent Dr. Eric Knost said, "These are improvements to the Geggie campus that are long overdue and much needed to accommodate our growing populations. The new appropriately sized library-media center will be a modern, exciting addition for our students and staff."
