Marquette graduate Sujay Murali is a 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholar, one of our nation's highest honors for high school students.

Murali is in a select group. Out of the 3.6 million students who graduated from high school this year, approximately 5,200 students qualified for consideration. Only 161 earned the recognition.

On Monday, Murali received a proclamation from Missouri Governor Mike Parson for this accomplishment. The Governor congratulated Murali for his outstanding achievement in the areas of leadership, scholarship and contributions to education.

Marquette Principal Dr. Greg Mathison shared that Murali is a well-rounded student. "He earned a perfect ACT and is a 2019 National Merit Finalist. His teachers say he enjoys and appreciates a challenge. Plus, he has a strong internal compass showing kindness and consideration in our school community," noted Mathison. "What I see in Sujay is that not only is he an incredible student, he is a wonderful person."

Murali is the son of Srinivasan Murali and Sukanya Mani of Ballwin.

Mani noted she is immensely proud of her son. "He is modest about his accomplishments," she shared. "But I know he has put in the hard work to follow his dreams and pursue a balanced life. He truly understands what is most important."

The family is preparing for a trip to Washington D.C., in the coming weeks where Murali will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion.

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic and technical excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.M
