In Rockwood, we regularly conduct evaluations of our programs. It's all about making our schools even better places for our students to learn and grow.
Last year, we evaluated school dismissal times as our Middle School Program Design Committee looked for ways to optimize times for our students. The committee researched and explored ways to improve our program.
At the outcome, they proposed recommendations for a later dismissal time, as well as improvements to other middle school programs. The Rockwood Board of Education approved the recommendations and an implementation team set to work.
We understand that changes to the dismissal times at one level will affect others. Our focus has been to carefully balance our bus tiers to coordinate multiple school start times, along with after-school activities schedules.
Thank you to those who volunteered to work on improving the educational experience for all our students. We appreciate our community working together on behalf of our Rockwood students.
Rockwood Transportation analyzed our current routing system, as well as utilized an independent study, to determine ways to optimize start times. The focus was to provide a later start time for middle schools, while minimizing impact to the high school and elementary school start times.
Beginning in August 2018, please note the following:
Families will be able to view the 2018-2019 bus stop locations and times via eLink, Rockwood's online Transportation Information System, in August 2018 as we prepare for the new school year. The Transportation Call Center will be available at that time to respond to questions about new school bus routes.
Rockwood middle school officials have a plan for early morning drop-offs in which school staff supervise children before school starts. Parents may contact their school principal about these before-school options.
Middle school students will have the opportunity to purchase breakfast and visit with friends in the school cafeteria prior to the first class beginning at 7:47 a.m. Student clubs and groups will continue to meet after school to maintain the integrity of the later start time in allowing students more time to sleep.
Rockwood elementary schools will continue to offer Adventure Club as a before-school and after-school option for all families, including early dismissal days for professional development for teachers.
Middle schools will continue to provide unique experiences that supplement our academic program. Activities are aligned to students’ interests, with opportunities for self-expression and recreational time with peers. In addition, Rockwood will continue to provide activity buses for students who may need transportation. For more information, contact your school office.
High schools will continue to offer a wide variety of clubs, activities and athletic programs after the school day. Next year, high schools will dismiss 12 minutes later due to the changes in bell times.
Rockwood will make an effort to limit the number of early dismissals by requesting that competitions hosted by schools further away be scheduled at later times.
