Starting with the 2021-2022 school year, Rockwood is asking for all district parents' cooperation in filling out a required Transportation Registration Form to indicate their children's transportation plans for the upcoming school year.
The form will allow the district to keep track of which families require district transportation via school buses, any special drop-off and pick-up instructions for students riding the bus and which families will be providing their own transportation.
Even if you do not plan on your child(ren) riding the bus, please fill out the form and let us know how your child(ren) will be transported to and from school. One form must be filled out for each child.
If you have any questions, please contact 636-733-8500.
As a result of the continued driver shortage, which most school districts in our region and state are experiencing, Rockwood will need to implement the following changes beginning with the 2021-2022 school year:
Please know that financial considerations played no part in this need to implement changes to our protocols. These changes are a direct result of our driver shortage, and we have been working very hard to avoid having to implement them. We have taken the following steps to try and address the staffing shortage:
Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to manage the driver shortage while providing safe and reliable transportation for as many students as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Transportation Department at 636-733-8500.
We are experiencing a significant driver shortage, and we will not be able to transport the number of students we had been able to prior to the pandemic. In a typical year, we transport more than 13,000 students, and this year ridership was reduced by approximately 3,600 students as a result of students enrolled in Rockwood at Home. We anticipate most of those students returning and needing bus service in the fall, and our driver shortages continue to be an issue.
We want to reiterate that this is not a financial issue. If we had enough drivers, we would not be considering implementing these changes. We would be doing a great disservice to our families by having routes established without having enough staff to drive those routes.
The walk boundaries vary by school, but for the most part, they are approximately one mile from school.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has guidelines that allow students to walk up to 3.5 miles to and from school. The district is only considering reducing transportation for those who live approximately one mile from their school and in instances where it is deemed safe to walk.
Walk zones are identified as areas that are deemed safe for students to walk. Neighbors may also want to consider coming together to work out a schedule to rideshare or to escort students on the walk to school.
These intersections will be identified, and crossing guards will be assigned to maintain a safe crossing for students.
Once you register your child for bus transportation, you will not have to do anything else unless you have a life-changing event (you move, or you require a permanent second drop off or pick up location). The registration is for regular home to school transportation. Each new school year, all students will have to be re-registered for transportation.
With the reduction of bus routes due to the ongoing driver shortages, we will not be allowing guest riders. Only in emergency situations will we consider allowing a guest rider.
Please allow 24-48 hours after your submission and check e-Link for your child’s updated bus information. If you are requesting an alternate address, you will receive an email confirmation once your request has been processed.
Yes, all students and drivers will be required to wear a face covering when they are on the school bus.
